Mosley School Community:

It is with heavy hearts that we share that our school’s namesake, Geneva Epps Mosley, died recently following a brief illness. We will be forever grateful to Ms. Mosley for her 29 years of service in the Tempe Elementary School District, including 11 years as a Kindergarten Teacher at Frank Elementary and 18 years at our school (formerly Gililland Middle School).

Ms. Mosley came from humble beginnings in Texas and began working on a farm when she was just 11 years old. Through persistence and determination, she found her way to Arizona State University and into teaching. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1959 and a Master of Arts in elementary education in 1965. It has been reported that she was the first African American teacher hired by the Tempe Elementary School District. After retirement, she continued to work as a substitute teacher until she was 80 years old.

Among her many remarkable accomplishments, she was proudest of touching the lives of so many of her students. While we are saddened by her passing, we are so thankful for having had the chance to know her. She was able to attend our school’s renaming ceremony and new school ribbon-cutting event. Her passion for teaching and her dedication to her students serves as an inspiration and enduring legacy for our school community.

Sincerely,
Erica Bradford
Principal
